Liver Cirrhosis

Fatty liver disease is the build-up of fat in the liver inhibiting its normal functioning. If over 5%-10% the liver’s weight is fat, then you have fatty liver disease. There are two types of fatty liver disease; Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease which is caused by alcoholism.
NAFLD is not caused by alcohol consumption. It is caused by metabolic factors and people with Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, excess weight or obesity and people with Metabolic Syndrome are at higher risk of developing NAFLD.
NAFLD has four stages, from stage 1 being the mildest causing no liver damage to stage 4 being the life-threatening stage when the entire liver is made of scar tissue (liver cirrhosis).
Stage 2 is called Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH). This leads to inflammation, damage and death of liver cells. NASH could lead to scarring or liver cirrhosis.
